The Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) degree program aims to prepare students for teaching in the secondary school. The main feature of the BEEd and the BSEd programs is student teaching, a kind of apprenticeship designed to develop professional, social, and academic insights and skills as the student-teacher participates in the actual operation of the school, in teaching as well as non-teaching activities of the profession. It is so designed that the last semester of the four-year program is devoted entirely to intensive student teaching.

The University of the Philippines (UP) is the country’s national university, as declared by its Charter of 2008 which was approved by the 14th Congress of the Philippines on April 29, 2008. This premier institution of higher learning was established in 1908 and is now a system composed of seven constituent universities and one autonomous college spread throughout 15 campuses in the archipelago. As of 2012, the UP System’s student population was estimated at 57,000. UP was founded on June 18, 1908 through Act No. 1870 of the Philippine Assembly. The university was created upon the recommendation of the Secretary of Public Instruction, W. Morgan Shuster, to the Philippine Commission, the upper house of the Philippine Assembly. Act 1870 authorized the Governor General to establish UP in the “city of Manila, or at any point he may deem most convenient.” UP was to give “advanced instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences and arts, and to give professional and technical training” to every qualified student regardless of “age, sex, nationality, religious belief and political affiliation.”

Senior high school student expecting to graduate before SY 2026-2027 from a DepEd-accredited high school or an accredited secondary school abroad; OR
Graduate of a DepEd-accredited high school or accredited secondary school abroad; AND
Must have final grades for Grade 8, 9, 10 and Grade 11;
Must not have taken any college subject/s prior to the opening of SY 2026-2027;
Must not have taken the UP College Admission Test before; AND
Must not have applied and completed the UP College Application for either the AY 2021-2022 (UPCA 2021), AY 2022-2023 (UPCA 2022), AY 2023-2024 (UPCA 2023).

Bachelor of Secondary Education equips students with strong pedagogical training and subject-matter expertise to effectively teach junior and senior high school. The program combines theory and practice through rigorous coursework, field study, and a full teaching practicum, preparing graduates for the Licensure Examination for Teachers and ensuring they are classroom-ready. A UP degree is highly respected, giving graduates an edge in employment at public and private schools, international institutions, or in roles such as curriculum development, educational research, and school leadership.

Become licensed high school teachers in public or private institutions, specializing in their chosen major (e.g., English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies). With experience and further training, they may advance to positions such as master teacher, department head, or school administrator. Beyond classroom teaching, they can work as curriculum developers, instructional coordinators, educational researchers, guidance counselors, or corporate trainers.
